Philip Poroma floors over 500 golfers, wins Independence Cup

It was a dream come true for Philip Poroma as the handicap 14 Amateur Golfer became the overall winner of the 2023 Independence Golf Tournament.

The game organised by the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja was to mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary.

Poroma outplayed other players after he played 80 gross with the best net of 66 to lift the prestigious trophy in addition to a brand new car.

“I am highly elated to emerge the winner of this year’s event. Though I had the dream and I worked tirelessly for it, but am still surprised. I however dedicate the trophy to Nigeria, my country”, the elated Poroma said after his decoration as Star Prize winner.

Captain of the IBB Golf Club and winner of the Division 1 men category for handicap 0 to 10, Banjo Obaleye, said he felt fulfilled, noting that the game was not elitist as wrongly perceived in some quarters.

Chairman, Organising Committee of the competition and Vice-captain of the Club, Ibrahim Babayo said, “We are also trying to partner with FCT to make Nigeria a golfing destination. We have excellent golf courses here that can compete with anyone in the world”, he said.

Some Nigerian and foreign participants comprising the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board, Simbi Wabote and President, Cameroon Golf Federation, Lothin Ellessa, commended the 2023 edition, stating that it satisfied its objectives.

Asidep the star prize of a brand new car, other winners in the four different categories of the tournament were awarded with various classes of trophies including cash rewards.
