Coordinated search for the killer of Kogi State University’s lecturer, Dr. Justice Otitolaye, has commenced in order to bring the murderers to book as soon as possible, the state’s command of the Nigerian Police have said.
Otitolaye was abducted by unknown gunmen at about 9p.m on his way to the supermarket at Ayingba last Friday, and was found dead on Sunday at Ejule, about eight kilometres from the main campus.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Elvis Aguebor, disclosed that the police have spread their search to all parts of the state in the manhunt for the killers.
According to him, the lecturer was killed by suspected criminals who escaped from Kotokarfe Prison during an attack on the facility this month, when 144 inmates were released.
The criminals, he disclosed, first attacked the police formation at Ibro Suite at Ayingba with explosives and gunshots before abducting the lecturer, while the police officers at the post escaped unhurt.
Aguebor assured that the police would do all they could to apprehend the criminals and return them to the prison to face justice.
However, he called on the public for useful information that would assist in tracking down the criminals, stating that crime fighting is the responsibility of all and sundry.
Meanwhile, there is apprehension among the students and members of staff of the institution following the killing of the senior lecturer, who was also the former director of the Centre for Pre-degree and Diploma.
SavidNews gathered that he was abducted around the Stadium Road, adjacent to the campus. The gunmen were said to have fired sporadically into the air before abducting the lecturer to an unknown
destination. His body was later found at Ejule.
The body, said to be riddled with bullet wounds, has been deposited at the university’s teaching hospital. Lecturers and students have expressed shock at the incident, as they described Otitolaye as an easy going and peace-loving gentleman.
They urged the institution’s management to take urgent steps to address the incessant killings at the institution. In another development, a 400 level Mathematical Science student of the school,
Jimoh Faruk, was also killed around the dreaded Stadium Road on Saturday night, sources say.
