President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria is set to cut down the number of federal ministries from 42 to 19, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, has disclosed.
Earlier during his trip to Cotonou, President Buhari dropped a hint about his plans during an interaction with the Nigerian community in Benin Republic.
The pruning of Federal ministries was part of the recommendation of the Alhaji Ahmed Joda transition committee.
Shehu stressed President Buhari’s commitment to reducing the ministries and explained the plan would save governance cost and ensure proper coordination of duties and better service delivery.
He said however, that there would be no job losses in the process of pruning the ministries, departments and parastatals, adding that the process would be a very “painstaking thing” that would be done very carefully.
He said workers need not fear as the Buhari administration would not create unemployment, assuring that the president remained committed to his promise to create jobs.
