President Goodluck Jonathan has splashed the sum of 30.5million Naira on the Super Eagles who won bronze at the 2014 African Nations Championship at a reception in Abuja.

The President also admitted being thrilled by the team’s remarkable comeback against Morocco in a quarter-final match at the tournament.

President Jonathan at the reception announced a cash reward of N1m each to players and the head coach Stephen Keshi got N1.5m.

The assistant coaches also smiled home with N1m each while eight backroom staff got N500,000 each.

The country’s number one citizen noted that “though they did not win the competition, they still won the heart of Nigerians”.

He stated his administration’s resolve to continue to appreciate athletes who made the country proud in various competitions.

“This gesture is to show our appreciation for your hard work, commitment, and dedication to your fatherland. You can always count on us for support.

“The Federal Government is focused on rewarding sports men and women who have made the country proud at various international competitions,” he added.

Similarly after their win against Morocco, sports minister Bolaji Abdullahi showered the team with $100,000 (about N16 million), the same amount they got in the semi final despite losing to Ghana.
