Rabat Named World Book Capital for 2026, Celebrating Morocco’s Cultural Commitment – Ministry
Rabat – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) decision to designate Rabat as the World Book Capital for 2026 underscores Morocco’s unwavering commitment to cultural promotion and knowledge democratization, in line with the high directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
In a press release, the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Communication highlighted that Rabat, already recognized as Morocco’s Cultural Capital and the “City of Lights,” will now add the prestigious title of World Book Capital to its array of global and regional distinctions. The nomination presents a valuable opportunity to raise collective awareness about the importance of books and reading.
This designation will also strengthen collaboration between public institutions and civil society, aiming to build an inclusive reading culture, especially among the youth. The Ministry emphasized that Rabat’s new role as World Book Capital will shine a spotlight on Morocco’s rich cultural heritage, with innovative events designed to foster intercultural dialogue through the universal language of books.
Throughout the year, Moroccan literature will take center stage through a variety of activities, including writing workshops, debates, training sessions, and book fairs. To ensure the longevity of Rabat’s status as the capital of books and reading, the city will implement new, permanent initiatives, such as the creation of creative spaces.
The Ministry concluded that this rich and diverse program will not only reaffirm books as a pillar of cultural and creative industries but also recognize reading as a fundamental driver of Morocco’s New Development Model, while celebrating the nation’s cultural diversity.
