Members of the country’s national assembly may not make the trip to the Rio 2016 Olympics which commences in August, SavidNews understands.

The increasing and strong indications was gathered that members of the Senate and House of Representatives committees on sports is unconnected to the recent comments of president Muhammadu Buhari owing to lack of funds.

On Tuesday, President Buhari had warned that any sports official who has no business in the Rio Olympics must not travel for the games while he was decorated as the Grand Patron of the Nigeria Olympics Committee.

Buhari further said “In this regard, any official who has no business at the Games should stay at home to cheer the team from here and if they must travel to the Olympics, they should do so at their own expense.”

According to a source in the sport ministry, in the past, members of the sports committee in the national assembly travel with the national teams to any championship the country’s contingents attend.

Remunerations were doled out as estacode to members whether they travel or not with the Team Nigeria.

As it stands due to the dwindling revenue and global economic challenges, the country cannot afford to put their monies on the legislatures instead all those concerned must ensure that funds provided are utilized judiciously.

Nothing has been heard yet from the National Assembly principal sports committee officials including chairman senate Committee on Sports Senator Obinna Ogba with Kabiru Marafa as vice as well as the House committee chairman on sports is Goni Bukar Lawan with Anayo Nnebeas as vice.
