Scavengers feared dead, trapped in Kano demolished buildings

In a recent incident in Kano State, remnants of demolished buildings in the metropolis led to the unfortunate entrapment of several scavengers at Daula Hotel and Eid Praying Ground.

The Kano State police command’s spokesperson, SP. Abdullah Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed this development.The authorities had previously issued multiple warnings to the scavengers, urging them to avoid venturing near these sites due to safety concerns.

However, despite these cautionary measures, the scavengers continued their activities in the area.

On Thursday, 15th June 2023, around 2:30 pm, reports emerged that the remaining structures collapsed, resulting in the entrapment of the scavengers.

Swift action was taken, with the Commissioner of Police joining rescue workers from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and State Government officials at the scene.

During the joint briefing, it was revealed that there were casualties with a high possibility of fatalities. The authorities expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

In light of this incident, parents and community leaders are strongly advised to caution their children and wards against approaching such hazardous areas.

Prioritizing safety is paramount, and avoiding these sites is crucial to preventing further unfortunate incidents.
