The United Nations Secretary General’s Global Education First Initiative has a list of 18 barriers to school enrolment and completion, quality of learning, and global citizenship. Among them are affordable costs, humanitarian emergencies, gender discrimination, lack of learning materials, lack of teacher capacity and inadequate focus on values.

A World at School Global Youth Ambassador from Nigeria, Philip Obaji, is spearheading this campaign. He says the outlook is promising because nations are unanimous that quality education can only be achieved when all barriers are broken down.

“Governments are aware that to achieve the goals of Education For All, barriers must be broken down,” said Obaji. “180 countries signed up to make these goals happen, committing to putting legal frameworks, policies and finance in place so that everyone, no matter what their circumstances, could have an education – one that is available, accessible, acceptable and adaptable.

“Unfortunately, progress has been painfully slow. There are still major barriers to achieving the goals of Education For All. That is why A World at School Global Youth Ambassadors are putting pressure on governments to break down these stumbling blocks.”

Most of the 500 A World at School Global Youth Ambassadors, spread across 80 countries will be active on May 5, drawing support for ‘No Barriers’ campaign, and asking education authorities in their communities to clear the way for children to access quality education.

A World at School is a new digital mobilization initiative working towards achieving global education.
