A group of professionals under the aegis of Ibro Leadership Initiatives, ILI, has appealed to the immediate past governor of kogi state Alhaji Ibrahim Idris to vie for the senatorial race to save kogi East from legislative inactivity and doldrums.
The appeal was made over the weekend when the group paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Lokoja the state capital.
According to the group’s Director of media and strategy Hon, Atabor Julius said the call has become necessary to rescue the Zone in the Senate from political demagogues and novices .
He stated further that the former governor will bring his wealth of experience to bear on the quality of legislation in the Senate thereby positioning the Zone in the national scheme of things.
According to him “we have to impress on him to run for the senate as a saviour of kogi East which is Igala Kingdom from the litany of inexperienced and self serving political jobbers jostling for the senate slot from the area ” stressing that the it is only him that can defend the ideals of the zone in this political dispensation.
The director of media hinted further that Alhaji Ibrahim Idris “nine years administration in the state has brought tremendous developments of all the sectors of the state economy saying he is the only one among the aspirants that re- enact the feat in the senate”.
Atabor, therefore called on all the well meanings Igala sons and daughters, traditional rulers and friends of the Zone to
join hands with the group to put pressures on the indefatigable politician to join the senatorial race.
He lamented that the zone in the senate has suffered legislative deprivation and neglect due to low quality representation adding that after careful scrutiny of all those jostling to grab the ticket lacked the capacity to project the ideals of the zone through robust debates and presentation of bills and motions that will transform the zone .
Speaking in the same vein the national coordinator of the group Hon. Simeon Omala posited that the former governor’ s
absence from active politics in the past few years. Has slowed down political and socio-economic fortunes of the area even as he is earnestly calling him to contest the senate.
He averred that the only disservice Alhaji Ibrahim Idris will do to his people is to decline contesting for the senate saying his entering the race will rebuild the image of Igala nation in the Nigeria project.
Responding, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris thanked the group for keeping faith in him to contribute his quota to the development of kogi East and the entire kogi state.
While congratulating the group and the people of the state for mounting pressure on him to vie for the senate said he would have loved to be left alone to rest peacefully in his retirement.
According to him, “What I want to do now is to help the younger ones to grow . I believed helping them to grow will be beneficial to me than perpetually clinging to power”.
He however promised to give careful thoughts to the call even as it is coming from the group that he has high regards for their integrity and sense of reasoning.
Idris urged the people to pray fervently to God for his will to prevail assuring that it is only God that gives power.
He however charged on all Nigerians to join hands the president Goodluck Jonathan in the fight against insurgency stressing that the country cannot make progress in the face of insecurity.
