Sickle cell Diagnostic laboratory Commissioned in Katsina

“The Katsina State Government will sponsor two medical doctors and one laboratory scientist to study the sickle cell management course in London,” the wife of the Katsina State Governor, Fatima Ibrahim Shema disclosed this recently at the event of the commissioning of a sickle cell diagnostics laboratory built in the Turai Yar’adua Hospital.

The Governor’s wife who expressed hope that the course will assist in developing the potential of the doctors in cell related services said already some of the personnel who are presently managing the laboratory have been trained by experts.

Fatima Ibrahim Shema explained that the laboratory was built by the State Government to conduct newborn screening as well as sickle cell test and counseling. She noted that modern machines costing about one hundred and twenty million naira has been installed in the laboratory. Adding, it is the second of its kind in the State.

According to her, the sickle cell service clinic in its service to humanity began with forty patients and now has over eleven thousand patients who are receiving free
medical services in the Katsina, Daura and Funtua Sensational zone.

She called on people to visit the laboratory and conduct their test there, stressing that a
sensitization campaign is ongoing in schools on the prevention and management of the illness.

The outgoing Commissioner for Health, Hussaini Garba Yammamai lauded the
governor’s wife for her commitment to providing assistance to sickle cell patients and commended the State Government for building the laboratory.
