Summer Series: Portugal name solid 23-player squad for Nigeria & USWNT

Portugal senior women’s national team head coach Francisco Neto has announced a list of 23 players for the Summer Series in USA in June.

Portugal will be participating in an invitational tournament, where they will face current World Champions United States and African Champions, Nigeria.

The 23-player roaster which reflects a mix of experience and youth is dominated by players from Champions SL Benfica and Sporting Lisbon.

On the list, only four players based outside Portugal were called up, which includes England based Diana Silva, Hungary based Vanessa Marques, France based Jessica Silva and Italy based Claudia Neto.

Neto’s side will begin their campaign against the current world champion, on June 10th [19h38 locals, plus six hours in Lisbon], at the BBVA Compass Stadium, in Houston, Texas.

Going up against the USA, Neto’s ladies will be meeting their American counterparts for the tenth time, with the last clash on September 3, 2019, on American soil, where Portugal suffered 3-0 defeat.

They will follow with a meeting with Nigeria three days later, on June 13, at 6:15 pm local time, in the same stadium.

The 29th world ranked Portuguese side will also be meeting the 38 globally ranked Super Falcons at the international level for the first time on June 13.

The tournament will serves as a build up for the Quinas, who are drawn against Germany, Serbia, Turkey, Israel and Bulgaria in qualification for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, beginning from September.

The Portuguese delegation are scheduled to converge on June 6, at the Hotel TRYP Aeroporto, and head out to Houston at 5:00 am on the 7th, with a stopover in Amsterdam. Arrival on US soil is scheduled for 1:10 pm local time (plus six hours in mainland Portugal).
