Super Falcons fall to 38th in September Fifa ranking

Nigeria’s senior women national team have dropped nine places to 38th in the latest Fifa world ranking released on Friday after their crash out in the Rio 2016 Olympics qualifying series.
In July, the reigning African champions were adjudged the 29th best women football playing team in the world, despite exiting the preliminary rounds of the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.
Falcons continued their downward trend at the 2015 All African Games where they lost three straight games – twice to Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon to finished with no medal.
Winners of the All African Games women football event, Ghana (52, unmoved), runners-up Cameroon (45, down 2 spots) and third-place winner Cote d’Ivoire (52, up 5 places).
In the overall world ranking, the top five places remained unchanged with reigning world champions USA, Germany, France, Japan and England retaining their places, while Korea DPR (6th, up 2), Brazil (7th, down 1), Sweden (8th, down 1), Australia (9th, unmoved) and Norway (10th, unmoved).
In Africa, the Super Falcons remained the best in Africa while the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon overtook Ghana in second spot dropped two places to 45.
Equatorial Guinea rose to third place moving up five spots into number 50 pushing the Black Queens of Ghana to fourth best African team though unmoved in 52nd. South Africa dropped two spots to 61st in fifth spot and Cote d’Ivoire climbed up five places to 62nd in the World.
Interestingly, Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon that defeated Nigeria were the Africans that made the highest surge moving up 5 places respectively on the global rankings.
The next Fifa ranking for women will be published on 18 December 2015.
