Transition Examination Is Of No Importance, Scrap It – Lawmaker Urges Kogi Govt
[contextly_auto_sidebar]The Member representing Olamaboro Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon. Linus Ojochenemi Eneche has urged the state government to scrap Transition Examination in secondary schools.
The lawmaker made the call on Wednesday 5th October, 2016 in a motion calling on the state government to abolish multiple examination system being operated by the Ministry of Education and her agencies.
“It is noted with great concern the duplication of examinations for our secondary education in Kogi State whereby multiple examinations are conducted by the Ministry of Education and its Parastatals all in the name of preparing the pupils for WAEC, NECO or NABTEB.
“Whereas Kogi State Ministry of Education and the Teaching Service Commission are competing for who organizes which examination thereby causing an internal crisis. We have secondary examinations as the Transition Examination, Mock Examination, WAEC, NECO and promotional examination from SS2 to SS3. These examinations take place simultaneously, paid for and in most cases not marked, he said.
According to the lawmaker, the current economic recession will become unbearable for parents who must finance all the examinations within limited time frame or sanctioned as their wards are barred from these examinations for non-payment.
Stating the effect of multiple examinations, he listed Transition Examination, Mock, WAEC, NECO and three terminal examinations students will write within one year.
He added: “The Kogi State Government has already withdrawn its sponsorship of candidates for the aforementioned examination coupled with the economic realities of recession at the micro and macro levels, this Transition Examination is no longer feasible. You can see that the money for payment is no longer available or attainable. As representatives of our people, you are aware, parents keep running to us for financial assistance.”
Hon Eneche prayed the state government to streamline the number of examinations by abolishing the Transition Examination, saying that it has no direct impact on the students.
