Abduljabar Sani has been named as substantive captain of Nigeria U17 with few days to their U17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger Republic.

The Golden Eaglets will face the Baby Menas on Saturday as they hope to qualify for the 2017 edition billed for Madagascar.

He will be assisted by Igoh Ogbu and goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleke.

According to coach Manu Garba, the leaders of the team were picked based on merit and sound conduct.

“We have been watching all the players over time and there is no doubt that Abduljabar has been very outstanding in terms of performance and general attitude amongst his colleagues,” said Garba.

“He is level-headed and we have also seen in him leadership qualities, and also he mixes freely with other players.

“Igoh and Adebayo are very outstanding players with strong personalities; Igoh for instance is like my former captain, Musa Muhammed with his commitment to the game while Adebayo is one of the best goalkeepers I have seen at this level in all my life in youth football; myself and the technical team believe they would both complement Abduljabar.”

Meanwhile, captain Sani who plays for G-Smart Academy has expressed his readiness to lead the country to glory despite the hefty requirements his role brings.

“I’m very happy to be named the captain; Insha Allah, we shall win our matches.”
