Umuahia 2015: Rivers Angels seal Women Premier League Super Six final spot

Reigning champions Rivers Angels have sealed a place in the final of the ongoing 2015 Nigeria Women Premier League Super Six after a 1-0 victory against Sunshine Stars on Tuesday.

The six teams competition which was on Monday launched by the Wife of Abia State Governor, Nkechi Ikpeazu, attracted hundreds of football fans in the Abia State capital, which holds between November 2 to 6.

The six participating Nigerian women teams are Rivers Angels, Confluence Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, Delta Queens, Osun Babes and Sunshine Queens, who all finished in the top three on the two standings of the abridged league.

The round robbin football event, had Delta Queens, Bayelsa Queens and Confluence Queens in Group B, while in Group A are Rivers Angels, Sunshine Queens and Nasarawa Amazons.

The competition will produce the overall champion of the Nigeria Women Premier League for the 2014/2015 season.

Loveth Ayila’s solitary strike in the 39th minute helped their Port Harcourt Ladies edged past the Akure Ladies, who are Women Federation Cup vice champions and this year’s finalists at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

At the same venue, 2015 Women Federation Cup finalists, Bayelsa Queens stepped up their chase for double with a 4-1 victory against Confluence Queens. Edeji Chindinma’s brace and a goal apiece from Dabrinze Blessing, Rafiat Sule and blew out the Kogi Ladies’ lone strike from Rosemary Okoro to nick four points.

Earlier on Monday, Rivers Angels, who nicked a double clinching the Women Federation Cup and league title last season began their title defence on a victorious note thanks to Amanze Mercy’s 29th minute winner against Nasarawa Amazons.

In the other opening day match had Delta Queens been held to a 1-1 draw by Bayelsa Queens after Tantoh Malvis’ early opener for the Warri Ladies was cancelled by the Yenegoa Ladies’ Lucky Odiri.

The football event continues at the same venue on Tuesday, November 3 with Bayelsa Queens seeking their first win against Confluence Queens in the early kick off while, Rivers Angels will hope to consolidate on their opening victory against Sunshine Queens.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, the Confluence Queens will engage Delta Queens to topple Group A leaders Bayelsa Queens with four points and later after Sunshine Queens would have taken on Nasarawa Amazons in a mere formality clash.
