UNN Nsukka Wins Chuma Anosike 6th South East Cricket Championship Cup

University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) cricket team on the 11th of April 2016 at the UNN cricket oval won the 2016 Chuma Anosike cup.

The cricket championship is for the South East states namely Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi. The UNN team defeated Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State (UNIZIK) by 80 runs having scored 150 runs for 10 wickets in their innings of 25 overs while UNIZIK scored 70 runs all out in 18.2 overs in their innings. The toss was won by the UNN who elected to bat first.

To get to the finals, UNN team emerged tops of the Group A that had Ebonyi State (represented by the Trinity Secondary School, Abakaliki) and Anambra Team B (represented by the Bishop Crowther Seminary Awka).

UNN secured the six points after winning all their matches. In the Group B encounter, Anambra Team A represented by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka won their only match against Abia State (represented by the Government College Umuahia). Imo State who was in the same group could not attend the competition at the final minute.

Earlier in the 3rd place match, Anambra State represented by Bishop Crowther Seminary Awka (BCS) defeated Abia State by a run when they declared having scored 93 runs as against Abia State 92 runs.

Highlight of the final was the presentation of awards and prizes to teams and players which include Batsman of the series to Obinma Chisom of UNN who scored 100 runs in two matches, Best Bowler of the series went to Ezeaguba Chijioke of UNIZIK took six wickets in the championship. Other awards include Best fielder of the series-Ifeakor Makuachukwu of Anambra State team, Wicket keeper of the series – Ogbue Chuka of UNN, Best Behaved team- Abia State and Cricketer of the series – Okoye Dumebi of UNN.

Many dignitaries including the sponsor of the championship Bar. Chuma Anosike graced the event.
The sponsor who expressed his gladness on the quality of play and the organization urged all to support the effort of spreading the game to the grassroot as that is one of the ways the game of cricket will continue to grow.

He further promised that he will continue to sponsor and give platform for the youth’s development through Cricket. He finally advocated for constant play and friendly encounters to enable young and older players develop their skills.

The representative of the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Dr. G. Ogbobe thanked the sponsor for the sponsorship and for coming to UNN to host the Championship for the 2nd time and promised that the Institution will continue to provide the platform for cricket events and Championships.

Prof. Jacob Onyechi (Teambar), Nigeria Ex-International and the Coach of UNN was optimistic that UNN will never relent in its effort to develop the game of Cricket in the University. Other guests present include, the Director of Sports UNIZIK Sir. Peter Makasi, Director of Sports UNN, Mr. Oliver Ngwoke amongst others that graced the final match.

The coordinator of the Championships, Emeka Igwilo also announced that the University of Nigeria Nsukka has won the cup for keeps having won the coveted trophy in 2014, 2015 and 2016 Championships.

The 7th Edition of the South East Cricket Championship is expected to take place in Anambra State in 2017.
