US hails Benin as ‘Democratic Leader in West Africa’

The US has described the Republic of Benin as a democratic leader in West Africa, because of the many successful transparent elections which the country has held.

In a congratulatory message to Benin on the occasion of its 53rd independence anniversary, being marked 1 Aug, US Secretary of State John Kerry said: ‘The United States and Benin share a friendship based on common interests and values. Since the 1990s, Benin has held multiple free and fair elections, cementing its role as a democratic leader in West Africa.

‘We look forward to deepening our partnership to promote good governance and economic development, regional stability, and the empowerment of vulnerable populations.’

The US wished the Government and people of Benin ‘a festive celebration and a peaceful, prosperous future.’
