Enyimba suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in a tough first leg, preliminary round fixture against Vipers Sport Club of Uganda at the Nakivubo Stadium in Kampala on Friday.

The reigning Nigerian champions’ dreams of an away result were crashed by Erisa Sekisambui’s lone strike who gave Vipers an away advantage ahead of the return leg in Nigeria.

It was a cagey encounter but the Nigerian side shone brightly with Andrew Abalogu failing to head home Ugwu Uwadiegwu’s cross from the visitors first corner kick of the game in the 14th minute.

In the 17th minute, Christain Pyagbara came close after he out ran two opposing defenders but fired wide inside the goal area.

Few moments later defender Chinedu Udoji almost handed the visitors a priceless lead but his header was cleared off the line by the hosts’ back men.

Abalogu failed to turn in Pyagbara’s pass into an empty net after a lovely square ball in the 29th minute as they retained dominance despite failing to find a breakthrough till the break.

In the second half, William Wadri comes on for John Semazzi in the 51st minute.

Sekisambu nicked the opening goal after he sailed in from the left flank after a solo pass from substitute Wadri, before firing past goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai in the 72nd minute.

The home crowd inspired the Vipers for a second goal but goalkeeper Afelokhai denied the hosts to keep the visitors in the mix in the 80th minute.

In the last six minutes, Enyimba’s late rally failed to produced a goal despite the introduction of Chukwude Stephen for Pyagbara as the hosts retained their lead till the blast of the whistle.

The return leg will hold at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba in a fortnight.
