‘We’ve Become Like Crabs That Can’t Move Forward’-Moghalu

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu, has said that Nigeria has become like crabs that can’t move forward but only sideways or backwards. Moghalu lamented that ethnic-identity supremacy has hobbled Nigeria’s potential as Africa’s most populous country, stymying both governance and the economy.

Moghalu’s comments came in response to the online #IgboMustLeaveLagos campaign, which he described as hate and criminal speech. He called on Nigerian leaders to take strong action against this kind of ethnic-cleansing propaganda, drawing a parallel to the Radio/TV Milles Collines demonization of the Tutsi in Rwanda 30 years ago.

As a Political Affairs Officer at the UN Secretariat Headquarters in New York at the time, Moghalu said he helped in efforts to counter and stop the Rwandan genocide, which sadly proved unsuccessful due to Great Power politics in the UN Security Council. The genocide was eventually ended by the military victory achieved by the Rwanda Patriotic Army led by Paul Kagame.

Moghalu commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for stepping out and calling for an end to the “dangerous nonsense” of the #IgboMustLeaveLagos campaign. He noted that not too long ago, Nigerian state governors went to Rwanda to be taught the art of Good Governance, and he believes that Nigerian leaders taking strong action would demonstrate that such hate has no place in the country.

Moghalu emphasized that ethnic-identity supremacy has hobbled Nigeria’s potential as Africa’s most populous country, stymying both governance and the economy. He said Nigeria has become like crabs that can’t move forward, only sideways or backwards.
