IBB Golf Course to reopen in December, Wike announces

The IBB Golf and Country Club in Aso Drive, Maitama District, Abuja, is set to undergo full rehabilitation and reopen to the public in December 2026.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, disclosed this on Friday, August 21, while inspecting major infrastructure projects across Abuja.

Wike said the rehabilitation of the golf club was being carried out following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restore the facility and ensure its reopening before the end of the year.

The club was previously shut down following an internal crisis among its members, leading to the establishment of a caretaker committee headed by the President of the Court of Appeal to oversee its affairs.

Wike commended the caretaker committee for facilitating the rehabilitation project, which was awarded to Julius Berger Plc, the company that originally constructed the golf facility.

According to the minister, Julius Berger had indicated that the rehabilitation could be completed by November. However, the FCT Administration has set December as the reopening deadline in line with the President’s directive.

“Mr. President directed that this Golf Course must be ready and reopened by December. So, we have given it to Julius Berger to make sure that everything is done, and by December this year, the Golf Course will be reopened,” Wike said.

The minister explained that the goal is for the facility to become financially self-sustaining after reopening, generating enough revenue to fund its operations without depending on public resources.

He noted that the golf club has traditionally served diplomats, residents and members of the public as a major recreational facility, adding that its closure had generated concerns among users.

Wike also explained that Julius Berger was selected for the rehabilitation because of the company’s familiarity with the facility, having originally constructed the golf club.

“You know Julius Berger did this work, and so we have to bring them back. So, we are doing everything possible to pay them and we are paying them, and they have to complete the job,” he said.

During the inspection tour, Wike also expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on Collector Road CO1 in Life Camp and Arterial Road N1 linking Wuye District to Ring Road II.

He praised Julius Berger for the quality and pace of construction on Collector Road CO1, which stretches from Berger Clinic in Life Camp to Dape District, and said the project was expected to be ready for handover by December.

The minister similarly commended Arab Contractors for its work on Arterial Road N1, saying the project was progressing according to schedule and would also be ready for handover in December.

Wike urged members of the IBB Golf and Country Club to appreciate President Tinubu’s intervention in restoring the facility and expressed confidence that its reopening would provide a major boost to recreational activities in the nation’s capital.
