Nigeria's medal haul grows as Ruth Nyong wins silver in Glasgow
Team Nigeria's medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games received another boost on Sunday after weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong powered her way to a silver medal in the women's 48kg event.
Nyong displayed remarkable resilience throughout the competition, finishing with a combined lift of 168kg to secure a place on the podium and hand Nigeria its fourth silver medal of the Games.
India's Mirabai Chanu Saikhom dominated the event, setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 190kg to claim gold, while Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry settled for bronze with 167kg.
The Nigerian began strongly in the snatch, recording a best lift of 75kg to sit third behind Chanu's 85kg and Henry's 77kg. But it was in the clean and jerk where Nyong produced her defining moment, successfully lifting 93kg to finish on 168kg overall, just enough to edge Henry by a single kilogram and snatch the silver medal.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria endured disappointment on the basketball court as the men's 3x3 side fell 21-16 to hosts Scotland in their fourth group-stage match. The defeat leaves the Nigerians with a 1-3 record, their lone victory coming against Cape Verde in the opening game.
With three gold and four silver medals now in the bag, Team Nigeria will be aiming to add more podium finishes as several athletes remain in medal contention in Glasgow.
