CAF shuts down Egypt's bid for extra Champions League slots
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has turned down a proposal from the Egyptian Football Association seeking an expansion of CAF Champions League slots for Africa's highest-ranked member associations ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Egyptian FA had proposed that the top 12 ranked member associations be allocated three CAF Champions League places each, an increase from the current quota in a move aimed at enhancing representation for the continent's strongest football nations.
CAF confirmed receipt of the proposal but stated that its Competitions Department could not approve the changes at this stage, citing limited time before the start of the new campaign and existing regulations governing CAF interclub competitions.
According to the continental football governing body, all member associations had already been notified of their participation quotas for the 2026/27 season last month, making any amendments impractical ahead of the forthcoming competition.
However, CAF is understood to be receptive to the idea in principle and may revisit the proposal for possible implementation beginning with the 2027/28 season.
Sources indicate that the proposal has garnered support from some members of the CAF Executive Committee from North Africa, while officials from Central and West African federations are yet to receive comprehensive briefings on the matter.
With CAF's decision now finalized, the debate over additional Champions League berths has effectively been shelved for the 2026/27 season, with attention expected to shift toward potential reforms in the 2027/28.
