Nigeria Cricket trims female junior Yellow Greens camp to 18 players
The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) has stepped up preparations for the Junior Female YellowGreens' upcoming international engagements, with the team's training camp in Benin City entering a crucial stage.
After an initial round of assessments, the coaching crew has trimmed the squad from 22 players to 18, intensifying the battle for places in the final team that will represent Nigeria on the international stage.
The remaining players will now undergo a more demanding phase of camp focused on sharpening technical skills, improving tactical understanding, strengthening team chemistry and clearly defining individual roles. The programme also includes a series of practice matches against the senior women's national team and other selected opponents, providing the coaches with further opportunities to evaluate the squad under competitive conditions.
Head coach Sarah Bakhita said the objective extends beyond identifying the most talented players, stressing the importance of building a disciplined and united team capable of competing at the highest level.
"This phase of camp is focused on bringing the players together as a team, defining and mastering individual roles, and creating an environment where everyone understands their responsibilities. The practice matches will provide valuable opportunities to assess our progress and ensure we are prepared for the challenges ahead," she said.
The open camp remains a vital part of the Nigeria Cricket Federation's long-term player development programme, giving emerging talents the chance to compete for national selection while exposing them to the standards expected at international level.
With places in the final squad still up for grabs, players continue to be assessed on performance, consistency, discipline, adaptability and their ability to deliver under pressure as the coaching staff edges closer to naming its final selection.
