Table Tennis: Nigeria U-19 boys book World Youth Championship spot
Nigeria’s U-19 boys’ table tennis team have sealed their place at the 2026 ITTF World Youth Championships after producing a title-winning performance at the African Youth Championships in Accra, Ghana.
The young Nigerians emerged champions in the U-19 boys’ team event to secure Africa’s lone qualification ticket in the category, earning the right to compete against the world’s best in Istanbul, Türkiye, from November 21 to 28.
Their qualification means Nigeria will fly the continent’s flag alongside Egypt, who dominated the championships by claiming the remaining three qualification places in the U-15 boys, U-15 girls and U-19 girls events.
The World Youth Championships, scheduled for the Ata Sporları Merkezi in Istanbul, is regarded as one of the biggest platforms for emerging table tennis stars, bringing together elite players in the U-15 and U-19 divisions.
For Nigeria, the achievement represents another significant milestone in the country's drive to develop the next generation of world-class talents capable of emulating African greats such as Quadri Aruna on the international stage.
While Egypt secured the bulk of Africa’s representation with three titles, Nigeria ensured the continent's U-19 boys' crown remained outside Egyptian hands by claiming the fourth and final ticket.
ITTF Africa Deputy President Alfred Bagueka hailed the growing quality of the continental championship, noting that more nations are beginning to challenge the traditional powerhouses.
"I am particularly impressed with the outcome of this year's tournament. More teams and players took part, making the competition tougher and more exciting," Bagueka said.
"I can see significant improvement across all teams, especially from lesser-known sides whose players added to the competitiveness."
Despite the progress, Bagueka urged Africa's rising stars to convert their continental success into global excellence.
"In the last five years, we have had Omar Assar and Quadri Aruna among the best in the world. But lately, how many African players are in the top 20 globally?" he asked.
"We must redouble our efforts to ensure our players reach that level. I am hopeful that these young talents can break through on the world stage."
The ITTF World Youth Championships has long served as a launchpad for future international stars, with many senior champions first announcing themselves at the tournament.
Nigeria's U-19 boys will now shift their focus to preparations for Istanbul, where they will aim to build on their continental success and test themselves against the world's finest young table tennis teams.
