Shooting Stars end 27-year continental participating drought

Historic Nigeria Premier Football League side Shooting Stars SC have officially sealed a return to continental football for the first time in 27 years.

The Ibadan based club, popularly known as the Oluyole Warriors, confirmed their qualification for next season’s African club competition despite suffering an away defeat to Niger Tornadoes on Sunday.

Shooting Stars held on to third position on the NPFL table after Ikorodu City FC were stunned at home by Rangers International, a result that ultimately secured the Ibadan club’s continental ticket.

Before the turn of the millennium, Shooting Stars were regular campaigners on the African stage and among Nigeria’s most respected football institutions.

The club last won the Nigerian league title in 1998 before featuring in the 1999 CAF Champions League.

Since then, the Oluyole Warriors had endured a lengthy absence from continental football, making this qualification a major achievement for the club, its management, players, and loyal supporters.

Their return to Africa’s elite club competitions signals a fresh chapter for one of Nigeria’s most historic football sides as they prepare to fly the country’s flag on the continent once again after nearly three decades away.
