Boniface gets Bayer Leverkusen coach’s applause after brief cameo in Cup win
Bayer Leverkusen head coach Carles Martínez has praised Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface following his brief appearance in the German club’s 5-2 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg in the DFB Cup.
Boniface, who has struggled for regular playing time this season, was introduced late in Wednesday’s encounter at the BayArena, replacing Jonas Hofmann in the closing stages.
Despite spending just over three minutes on the pitch, the Nigerian forward impressed Martínez, who acknowledged his desire to play a more significant role in the team.
“I’m happy for him because I know he wanted to play and be important,” Martínez said, according to Liga Insider. “He was good in those few minutes.”
The appearance marked Boniface’s second outing of the campaign, following his substitute appearance in Leverkusen’s season-opening Bundesliga fixture against SV Elversberg.
The 25-year-old has endured a frustrating period at the German club, with limited opportunities raising questions about his position in Martínez’s plans.
His situation has also attracted attention following reports of frustration over his lack of involvement and speculation about a possible departure during the January transfer window. However, Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes recently maintained that the striker could still earn opportunities by improving his fitness and continuing to work hard.
Leverkusen’s comeback victory over Nürnberg provided a brief opportunity for Boniface to return to action, although the forward will be hoping for considerably more minutes in subsequent fixtures.
For the Nigerian international, Martínez’s positive assessment offers encouragement as he attempts to rebuild his momentum and compete for a regular place in the attacking setup.
The immediate challenge for Boniface will be to turn these limited opportunities into consistent performances that can convince the Leverkusen coaching staff to give him a more prominent role.
