Nigeria forward Kelechi Iheanacho continued his remarkable goalscoring form in Turkey on Saturday, scoring twice to inspire Bursaspor to a 2-1 comeback victory over Batman Petrolspor and send his side to the top of the TFF 1. Lig.

Batman Petrolspor took the lead through Doria in the 29th minute, but Iheanacho restored parity from the penalty spot in the 60th minute before completing Bursaspor’s comeback with an 85th-minute winner.

The brace took the Nigerian striker’s league tally to 11 goals and two assists in eight appearances since joining Bursaspor as a free agent from Scottish champions Celtic during the summer. 

More significantly, Iheanacho has now scored in eight consecutive league matches, matching a long-standing Bursaspor scoring record previously set by Brazilian striker Fernandao during the 2014/15 Süper Lig season. 

Fernandao found the net in eight successive league games between November 2014 and January 2015 before ending that campaign with 22 league goals. Iheanacho now has the opportunity to establish a new club record when Bursaspor return to league action. 

The Nigerian had already extended his scoring run with a brace against Manisa FK earlier in September, scoring in the 27th and 90+2nd minutes as Bursaspor secured a 2-1 away victory. 

His latest performance also strengthened Bursaspor’s position at the summit of the Turkish second tier. The club have recorded six victories and one draw from their opening eight league matches and hold a three-point advantage over Kayserispor, who have played one game fewer. 

Iheanacho’s resurgence represents a significant turnaround after his move to Turkey following a successful spell at Celtic, where he won the league and cup double.

The 29-year-old’s goalscoring form has also come at an important time for Nigeria, with the striker named in the Super Eagles squad for next month’s international friendly against Russia.

The call-up represents Iheanacho’s first return to the Nigeria squad in more than a year, with his last appearance coming during the 2025 Unity Cup in London. 

With 11 goals already registered and his scoring streak still intact, Iheanacho will now be looking to continue his impressive run and translate his club form into another strong chapter with the Super Eagles.
