NFF breaks silence, insists Eric Chelle remains Super Eagles coach
The Nigeria Football Federation has firmly dismissed swirling reports linking Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle with a move to Olympique de Marseille, stressing that it has no knowledge of any agreement between the tactician and the French Ligue 1 side.
Speculation gained momentum on Monday after online platforms claimed the Franco-Malian manager had sealed a one and a half year contract with the former European champions.
However, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, moved quickly to quash the rumours, maintaining that the federation remains completely unaware of such a development.
“As far as I know, there is nothing like that. We are not aware of any contract between Chelle and Olympique Marseille,” Sanusi disclosed underlining the federation’s position on the matter.
The NFF’s response comes amid growing uncertainty surrounding Chelle’s future, with reports suggesting he has attracted interest from clubs outside Nigeria.
Despite the mounting speculation, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau had earlier reaffirmed the federation’s confidence in the coach’s commitment to the national team.
“He is still with Nigeria and has one more year on his contract with the Super Eagles,” Gusau said, emphasising that Chelle remains bound to his current deal.
Chelle, who steered Nigeria to a third place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, continues to oversee the Super Eagles, with the NFF’s latest clarification aimed at putting to rest rumours of an imminent departure and reinforcing stability within the national team setup.
