Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle is reportedly set to earn $75,000 per month under a proposed new contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The reported agreement in principle would keep the Franco-Malian coach in charge of the Super Eagles until August 2028, while also expanding his responsibilities to include the Nigeria Under-23 team ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle. 

The proposed salary represents a reported 50 per cent increase on the $50,000 monthly remuneration attached to Chelle’s previous arrangement.

Chelle had reportedly sought a monthly package of $130,000 during negotiations before the parties arrived at the proposed $75,000 figure. 

A major change in the proposed agreement concerns the payment of his technical assistants.

Under the previous arrangement, Chelle was reportedly responsible for paying his assistants from his own salary. Under the proposed new structure, the NFF would take responsibility for the salaries of his technical team, separating the coach’s remuneration from the cost of his backroom staff. 

The proposed agreement is also expected to run from June 1, 2026, to August 2028, covering the Super Eagles’ AFCON 2027 campaign and the Olympic cycle.

Chelle’s expanded role with the U-23 side is intended to provide greater continuity between Nigeria’s senior and youth national teams, with the authorities seeking a more unified technical philosophy across the two levels.

The arrangement had already been agreed in principle during a June meeting involving NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade, then NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, former NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and Chelle.

Dikko confirmed at the time that a new term sheet had been agreed with the coach, including improved remuneration and responsibility for his assistants, although the exact salary was not publicly disclosed then. 

Sources cited in the latest reports also indicate that Chelle submitted a 19-point list of conditions during negotiations for the new agreement.

One of those conditions, the provision of a fully furnished and functional residence in Abuja, has reportedly been fulfilled. 

However, the proposed contract has yet to be formally executed, with the process reportedly affected by the resignation of Gusau and members of the NFF Executive Committee in August.

The changes within the federation have created uncertainty around the completion of several administrative processes, including the formalisation of Chelle’s new agreement. 

Chelle’s immediate focus remains the Super Eagles’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with Nigeria facing Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in the opening stages of the competition.

If eventually signed, the proposed deal would give Chelle responsibility for both the senior national team and the U-23 programme through the 2028 Olympic cycle, while placing the payment of his technical assistants directly under the NFF.

For now, however, the reported terms remain subject to formal approval and the signing of the contract by the relevant authorities.
