N-Youth League

42 clubs jostle for supremacy as N-Youth League Cup kicks off 2026/27 season

Nigeria’s technology-driven Under-19 football competition, the N-Youth League Cup (N-YLC), will enter a new phase of growth in the 2026/27 season, with 42 clubs set to compete for honours and opportunities to showcase their young talents to international scouts.

The league has expanded from 23 participating clubs in its inaugural 2024/25 season to 36 in 2025/26 and 42 for the new campaign, reflecting growing interest in a competition designed to connect emerging Nigerian footballers with professional opportunities at home and abroad.

Founded and led by its President, Robinson Adakosa, the N-YLC combines organised youth competition with technology, player-performance analytics and international scouting partnerships to improve talent identification and development.

“For us, this is not simply about organizing football matches. We are building a football development ecosystem that connects Nigerian talents to the global football industry,” Adakosa said.

He stressed the importance of providing young footballers with the structure, visibility and competitive experience required to progress to the professional level.

“Nigeria possesses an extraordinary pool of young football talent. Our responsibility is to ensure that these players are properly developed, professionally documented, consistently exposed to competitive football and given genuine opportunity to be discovered,” he added.

The league operates with support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), participating state football associations, professional clubs, academies and technology partners, including Wyscout and Eyeball.

These partnerships are intended to strengthen player documentation, improve access to performance data and increase the visibility of emerging talents among scouts and clubs seeking young prospects.

According to Adakosa, the league’s growth reflects the vision behind its establishment three seasons ago.

“Three seasons ago, we started with 23 clubs and a very clear vision: to create a professionally organised youth competition that would provide talented young Nigerians with the visibility they deserve. Today we are entering our third season with 42 clubs, international scouting platforms, players progressing abroad and increasing recognition,” he said.

For the 2026/27 campaign, participating clubs have been grouped into three regional conferences: South West, South South and North Central.

The structure is designed to improve geographical representation, maintain competitive balance and reduce the financial burden of travelling long distances for fixtures.

Teams will compete for places in the National Super 8 Championship, the league’s flagship end-of-season competition.

Sporting Supreme FC emerged champions of the previous National Super 8 Championship in Eket, Akwa Ibom State, and will return to the new campaign seeking another strong showing.

Beyond the domestic competition, the N-YLC is also pursuing international exposure opportunities for its most promising players.

Adakosa disclosed that an All-Star programme proposed for November 2026 in England, in partnership with Brooke House College, is expected to provide another platform for young Nigerian footballers to demonstrate their abilities.

The initiative is also intended to create commercial opportunities for participating clubs, enabling them to reinvest in facilities, coaching, player welfare and other areas of development.

Opening Fixtures Set for Remo Stadium

The South West Conference will provide some of the opening-day attractions, with Imperial FC scheduled to face Spartans FC at Remo Stadium in Ikenne.

Other fixtures in the conference include Unicorn FC against Olympique Lagos Football Academy, Saki Stars Sport Club versus Blaze Football Academy, and Athletic SC 2022 against Awatown Academy.

The schedule also features midweek encounters, with AMG Sports Academy taking on Seamoriow FC, while Shuffle Select FA will face House of Prayers.

Grassrunners FC are listed to meet Kwara F Academy, while Greenlock FC will battle The City Bride FC.

South South Conference Fixtures

The South South Conference will feature several fixtures as clubs begin their pursuit of a place in the National Super 8 Championship.

Enjima Station Nhecha F Academy will face Morale FC, while Bayelsa Starlets FA take on FC Prague Nigeria.

Golden Stars FA are scheduled to meet Marines City FC, with Sporting 24 FA facing Edel FC Awka.

Abia Warriors FC will also begin their campaign against RSMA-Peppers Sport Management Academy.

Sporting Supreme Face AS Roma Academy

In the North Central Conference, defending National Super 8 champions Sporting Supreme FC will face perennial rivals AS Roma Academy U16 of Abuja in one of the fixtures to watch.

Other matches in the region include Hyperbuzz against AS Roma Academy U17 and Almasi FC versus Darazo Football Academy.

JKD Football Academy are also scheduled to take on One Touch FC as the North Central teams begin their campaigns.

With 42 clubs participating, the new season is expected to provide a wider platform for young footballers to gain competitive experience while attracting attention from scouts and professional clubs.

For the N-YLC, the challenge will be to translate its growing participation, technological partnerships and international ambitions into tangible opportunities for players.

As the 2026/27 season gets underway, the competition’s organisers are looking to consolidate its position as a development pathway for Nigerian youth football, with the ultimate goal of helping talented youngsters move from academy football to the professional game.
