Austin Eguavoen praises Super Falcons defence, hails Ucheibe, Oladipo and Igbokwe
Nigeria's senior women's national team interim head coach Austin Eguavoen has praised the team’s defensive unit, singling out Christy Ucheibe, Shukurat Oladipo and Joy Igbokwe for their impressive performances and versatility.
Eguavoen, who featured as a central defender during his playing career, said he values players capable of operating in multiple positions, describing such flexibility as a significant asset to the national team.
“Maybe because I was a central defender. We recently spoke about a player who can play in more than one position. Such a player is very important. We are so blessed to have Christy Ucheibe,” he said.
“Ucheibe and Shukurat Oladipo are on top of their game. Joy Igbokwe is another fantastic player from Nasarawa Amazons. Home-grown. I am very impressed with the defensive line.”
The coach noted that having players who can perform in central defence and defensive midfield provides additional tactical options, allowing the team to adapt to different situations during matches.
Meanwhile, Eguavoen has explained the challenges of managing the squad, revealing that the initial list of 23 invited players eventually increased to 27.
The expanded squad meant several players did not feature in the two matches against Comoros, including Joy Omewa, Shakirat Moshood and Blessing Nkor.
Eguavoen said he had spoken with the players who missed out on the matches, assuring them that they would have opportunities to feature in subsequent fixtures.
“We invited 23 players and ended up with 27. Most of them didn't get to feel the game. I have spoken to those ones who didn't get involved in these two games that they have to come for the next games to be given the chance,” he said.
The interim coach added that he considered it important to communicate his selection decisions to the affected players, despite not being obligated to provide individual explanations.
“I don't owe them explanations, but I had to do it for the sake of being professional. I think sometimes it is good that we understand ourselves and that we are on the same page,” he added.
Eguavoen’s comments underline his appreciation for defensive versatility and the importance he places on communication and professionalism as the Super Falcons continue their preparations for upcoming international assignments.
