Abua, Adeleye lead Nigeria's charge as Morocco Davis Cup tie takes shape
Nigeria’s Canice Abua will open the country’s 2026 Davis Cup World Group II tie against Morocco when he takes on Karim Bennani in the first singles rubber on Saturday in Rabat.
The official draw for the highly anticipated tie was conducted at the Conference Hall of the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc in Rabat, following a meet-and-greet session involving players, coaches and officials from both countries.
Representatives of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) were also present at the ceremony.
Abua, Nigeria’s No.1 player, will face Bennani in the opening encounter, while Daniel Adeleye will battle Morocco’s Yassine Dlimi in the second singles rubber on Day One.
The action will resume on Sunday with the doubles, where Nigeria’s Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar will face Morocco’s Younes Lalami and Dlimi.
The reverse singles will then see Adeleye take on Bennani, before Abua faces Dlimi in the potentially decisive fifth rubber. All five matches will be played on clay and contested over the best of three tiebreak sets.
The tie carries particular significance for Nigeria, who are seeking their first Davis Cup victory over Morocco after losing all four previous meetings between the two nations since 1973.
The Nigerian team arrived in Rabat on Monday following an intensive training camp in Lagos and is led by Head Coach Benson Ishicheli. NTF Vice President Datti Yusuf represented the Nigerian delegation at the draw ceremony.
Nigeria earned promotion to World Group II for the first time in three decades after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, in February. Morocco, meanwhile, dropped from World Group I following a defeat to Colombia.
The winner of the Rabat tie will advance to the 2027 World Group I Play-offs, while the loser will remain in World Group II.
