Nigeria's Samson Adamu appointed acting CAF Secretary General in historic move

In a landmark moment for Nigerian football administration, Samson Adamu has been appointed Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, marking the first time a Nigerian has held the position since the organization’s establishment over 70 years ago.

Adamu’s elevation follows the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down from the role on Sunday, paving the way for a swift leadership transition within Africa’s football governing body.

Prior to this appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in organizing and managing major continental competitions.

His promotion is widely seen as a recognition of his administrative experience and growing influence within African football circles.

The decision was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the Congress during its meeting held on March 29, 2026, at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo.

Adamu’s appointment not only signals a new chapter for CAF’s leadership but also underscores Nigeria’s increasing presence in the governance of African football at the highest level.
