Ademola Lookman, Eric Chelle lead Nigeria's presence in AFCON 2025 Group stage Best XI
Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has been named in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Team of the Group Stage, with Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle also honoured after guiding the Super Eagles to a flawless group campaign.
The selection, unveiled by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Friday, recognises the standout performers from the opening phase of the tournament as focus now shifts to the knockout rounds.
Lookman’s inclusion comes after a sparkling group-stage display, where he finished with a joint-high four goal contributions to underline his importance to Nigeria’s perfect run of three wins from three matches. His performances also reflected the Super Eagles’ overall dominance, which saw Chelle rewarded with the Coach of the Group Stage accolade.
In goal, Egypt’s Mohamed El Shenawy was the standout choice after keeping one clean sheet and conceding just once while making eight saves across his two group appearances.
The central defensive pairing features Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba alongside DR Congo’s Axel Tuanzebe, with Tunisia’s Ali Abdi and Morocco’s Noussair Mazraoui selected as the full-backs.
Midfield places went to Cameroon’s Carlos Baleba, a key figure as the Indomitable Lions went unbeaten with two wins and a draw, alongside Lookman and Morocco’s Brahim Diaz, who registered three goal contributions during the group stage.
Up front, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez headlines the attack after scoring three goals to power his side to maximum points. He is joined by Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, who struck twice for Cameroon, and Senegal captain Sadio Mané, whose one goal and one assist helped the Teranga Lions progress.
With the group stage now complete, the CAF selection sets the tone for what promises to be a thrilling knockout phase at AFCON 2025.
