Cricket: Female Yellow Greens impress at Kwibuka T20i tournament

The Nigeria Women’s National Cricket teams wrapped up their campaign at the 2025 Kwibuka Women’s T20i Tournament in Kigali with spirited performances, finishing 5th overall.

Nigeria had a 6 run loss to Zimbabwe in the opening games. Despite a narrow 6 run DLS loss to Brazil after posting just 92, the team showed grit throughout the tournament. They bounced back with a thrilling 2-wicket win over Tanzania, led by Salome Sunday’s explosive 53 off 36 balls and Amusa winning the player of the match.

Hosts Rwanda proved too strong, defeating Nigeria by 40 runs. But the Yellow Greens responded in style, thrashing Cameroon by 104 runs after posting 140/4 and bowling them out for just 38.

In the West African derby, Nigeria defended 104 to beat Sierra Leone, with Amusa once again starring with both bat and ball. Another solid effort saw Nigeria post 107 and limit Malawi to 61/9, with Peace Usen leading the charge.

The highlight came in a tense rematch against Uganda. Nigeria clinched a 5-run win thanks to Anointed Akhigbe’s dramatic final-over hat-trick. She finished with 3/11, supported by strong spells from Samson and Ude.

With the ICC Women’s World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier looming in August, the Yellow Greens will take plenty of confidence from their Kigali campaign.
