Otan Ayegbaju hosts Nigerian rising stars at 6th Alabi Memorial Table Tennis Tournament

The historic town of Otan Ayegbaju is once again in the spotlight as it welcomes top table tennis talents from across the country for the 6th Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial Table Tennis Tournament, taking place from April 13 to 17.

Organised by the Osun State Table Tennis Association under the auspices of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, the tournament has grown into one of Nigeria’s premier sporting events. Originally established in honour of the late Michael and Felicia Alabi, parents of association chairman Ayodeji Alabi, the competition now serves as a key platform for developing emerging stars in the sport.

This year’s edition is set to be the biggest yet, with over 300 players converging on the town and competing across 14 events, including singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and veteran categories spanning U-15, men, and women. The total prize pool has also been increased to ₦5 million, up from ₦3.5 million in previous editions.

Defending men’s singles champion Abdulbasit Abdulfatai will be aiming to retain his title, although the absence of national champion Matthew Kuti and Muiz Adegoke—both preparing for the ITTF World Championships in London—opens the field for new contenders.

In the women’s category, reigning champion Hope Udoaka of Cross River State will also be under pressure to defend her crown in what promises to be a highly competitive field.

Tournament referee John Peters praised the growing participation, especially among younger players, noting that the event continues to attract talent due to its strong organisation and player support.

Matches will be held at the newly built Idera Multi-Purpose Hall, which is expected to host thrilling encounters as rising stars seize the opportunity to make their mark.

With established champions absent and a new generation eager to shine, the 2026 edition of the tournament promises intense competition and the emergence of fresh champions on Nigeria’s table tennis scene.
