Eguavoen gives updates on Ajibade injury after Comoros win
Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade has been taken to hospital for an MRI scan after sustaining an injury during Nigeria’s 5-0 victory over Comoros in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying tie.
Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen confirmed the medical examination after Tuesday’s encounter at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, saying the scan would determine the extent of the injury.
Nigeria secured a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory to advance to the third qualifying round, where they will face Morocco. However, Ajibade’s injury cast a shadow over the emphatic result.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward was forced off in the 28th minute following a collision with a Comoros defender. She was visibly in pain before being stretchered off, with Folashade Ijamilusi coming on as her replacement.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Eguavoen said he was waiting for the medical team’s assessment before commenting on the severity of the injury.
“Ajibade, I have not heard anything. I was with the medical team and they said they are taking her to the hospital for an MRI to ascertain the degree of the injury,” Eguavoen said.
He added that the team hoped to receive an update before returning to their hotel, explaining that the medical team would communicate the findings through the Super Falcons’ media manager.
“Hopefully, before we get back to the hotel we will know. As soon as we have information, I’m not the one to give it; the medical team will contact the Head of Media, and then we’ll get an update on Ajibade’s injury,” he said.
The coach expressed hope that the injury would not be serious, despite the concern raised by the captain’s early departure.
“Unfortunately, we lost Ajibade early in the game. I think and I hope that the injury is very minute,” Eguavoen added.
The Super Falcons responded to the setback with an impressive attacking display, extending their advantage after winning the first leg 2-0.
Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu scored two goals each in the return fixture, while Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty to complete the 5-0 win.
Nigeria’s victory secured passage to the third round of the African qualifying competition for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, setting up a potentially tougher test against Morocco.
Ajibade’s availability for the next stage will depend on the outcome of her medical assessment, with no confirmed diagnosis or recovery timeline had been announced.
The Super Falcons will now await the medical report as preparations continue for the Morocco tie, with the fitness of their captain emerging as a major concern following the victory.
