FIFA yet to agree on NFF normalisation committee as Nigeria awaits verdict
The fate of Nigerian football’s proposed Normalisation Committee remains uncertain as FIFA continues internal deliberations on its composition, with an official announcement expected soon.
A member of the FIFA delegation that recently visited Nigeria disclosed that the global football governing body had yet to reach a final agreement on the committee, which is expected to steer the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) through its ongoing leadership crisis.
The representative maintained that discussions were still ongoing, insisting that no definitive decision had been taken. “No firm decision has been made,” the FIFA official said, adding that an announcement would be made soon.
The delay comes amid heightened expectations following the August 2026 mass resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, members of the federation’s executive committee and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi.
The development created a leadership vacuum that prompted FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to dispatch a joint delegation to Nigeria to consult stakeholders and examine possible solutions to the crisis.
Following their engagements in Nigeria, the FIFA-CAF delegation returned to Zurich, Switzerland, where FIFA officials continued discussions on the next steps for Nigerian football.
Although expectations were high that the composition of the Normalisation Committee would be unveiled during FIFA’s recent meetings, the governing body has yet to make an official announcement, leaving stakeholders waiting for clarity on the transition process.
The proposed committee is expected to restore administrative stability, address outstanding governance concerns and create a pathway towards the return of an elected NFF leadership. While November 2026 has been proposed as the starting point for its assignment, with May 2027 projected as the end of its tenure, FIFA has yet to officially confirm either the membership or the timeline.
The eventual announcement is expected to determine the direction of the NFF’s leadership transition and shape the immediate future of football administration in Nigeria.
