Falconets cruise past Rwanda to reach 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Qualifiers third round

Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, booked their place in the third round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after defeating Rwanda 4-0 at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, on Saturday.

The emphatic result completed a 5-0 aggregate victory for the two-time World Cup silver medallists, who had edged the first leg 1-0 in Kigali a week earlier.

Head coach Moses Aduku rang the changes from the opening encounter, introducing Kesseina Oyijovwi, Fatimoh Tumininu, and Esther Inyang into the starting XI in place of Miracle Usani, Kafayat Mafisere, and Alaba Olabiyi.

The Falconets made a fast start, with Precious Oscar breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute after latching onto Janet Akekoromowei’s dazzling run and cut-back. Just seven minutes later, Fatimoh Tumininu doubled the advantage with a brilliantly taken free-kick.

Nigeria carried their two-goal lead into the break before Janet Akekoromowei added a deserved third in the 59th minute, her powerful strike from distance slipping through the goalkeeper’s grasp. Oyijovwi thought she had extended the lead moments later, but her header was ruled out for a foul.

The hosts sealed the rout in stoppage time, when Taiwo Afolabi bundled the ball over the line to complete a commanding performance.

With the victory, the Falconets march on to the third qualifying round, continuing their bid to secure one of Africa’s four tickets to the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
