Falconets edge Poland in World Cup preparation match
Nigeria’s Falconets have kicked off the final leg of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on a winning note, edging Poland 1-0 in an international friendly on Friday.
Mary Mamudu proved to be the difference at the Municipal Stadium in Brzeg, Poland, scoring the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time to hand Nigeria victory over the hosts’ U-20 women’s side.
The forward struck in the 45th minute plus one, giving the Falconets a deserved advantage heading into the break.
Poland pushed for a response after the restart, but the Nigerian defence held firm as neither side managed to find the back of the net in the second half.
The result, confirmed by the official Super Falcons X account after the final whistle, gives Nigeria a confidence boost ahead of the tournament and their remaining warm-up fixture.
The Falconets are using the friendly series as part of their final preparations for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which will be hosted by Poland from August 31 to September 22.
Nigeria will face South Korea on September 1 in their second and final scheduled friendly before turning their attention fully to the World Cup.
At the tournament, the Falconets have been drawn in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia.
Nigeria remain one of the most consistent teams in the history of the competition but are still searching for their first world title. Their best finishes came in 2010 and 2014, when they ended the tournament as runners-up.
With Friday’s victory providing an encouraging start, the Falconets will hope to build momentum and finally turn their long-standing promise into a historic World Cup triumph.
