From IDP camp to global stage: 12-year-old Mary Victor Zira inspires Adamawa with chess triumph

A 12-year-old displaced child from Michika Local Council in Adamawa State, Mary Victor Zira, has captured hearts nationwide after meeting Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to present her chess trophy — a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of opportunity.

Mary’s journey began at the EYN Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp, where she lives with her family after being forced from home by the Boko Haram insurgency. Amid the daily challenges of camp life, she discovered chess through the Chess in IDP Camps Initiative, founded by Vivian Ibrahim to inspire critical thinking and confidence among displaced children.

What started as a pastime soon became Mary’s passion. Using makeshift boards, she studied deep into the night, determined to master the game. Her dedication paid off when she represented Nigeria at the Chess and Community Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia — where she triumphed — and later showcased her talent at the United Nations Games in New York.

Upon her return, Mary, accompanied by Vivian Ibrahim and her team, paid a courtesy visit to the Adamawa State Government House to present her trophy to Governor Fintiri. The team also displayed one of the 750 chessboards donated to the initiative by The Gift of Chess organisation in New York, symbolising a growing movement to promote chess education across Northern Nigeria.

Governor Fintiri, visibly moved by Mary’s story, commended her for making Adamawa proud on the global stage and announced a ₦5 million support fund for her education and development.

Mary is now a full scholarship student at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Academy, continuing her studies while nurturing her chess talent.

For Vivian Ibrahim, Mary’s success is a testament to the transformative power of opportunity.

“Chess teaches critical thinking, patience, and discipline,” she said. “If one child like Mary can rise from an IDP camp to international recognition, imagine what hundreds more can achieve with the right support.”
