Kano Pillars suspend head coach Evans Ogenyi after poor start to NPFL season

Nigeria Premier Football League side, Kano Pillars, have suspended head coach Evans Ogenyi and his assistant, Ahmed Garba Yaro Yaro, following the team’s disappointing start to the 2025/26 campaign.

The decision came just hours after Sai Masu Gida suffered a 2–1 defeat to Barau FC in the Dabo Derby on Sunday, a match played behind closed doors at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano.

In a statement released by the club, management confirmed the suspension, citing poor performance as the reason behind the action.

“The Management of Kano Pillars FC wishes to inform our esteemed supporters and the general public that the Club’s Technical Adviser, Ogenyi Evans, and Chief Coach, Ahmed Garba Yaro Yaro, have been suspended with immediate effect following the team’s unsatisfactory performance in the ongoing 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season,” the statement read.

In the interim, former club captain and assistant coach Gambo Muhammad will take charge of the team alongside goalkeeping coach Suleiman Shuaibu. They will be assisted by Coach Garzali Muhammad (Kusa) from the Junior Pillars, who joins the setup in an ad-hoc capacity.

The once-dominant NPFL champions have endured a rough start to the season, sitting at the bottom of the table after eight matches with just two wins and five points. Their struggles have been compounded by a recent three-point deduction following fan unrest during a home fixture last weekend.

Kano Pillars will now look to steady the ship under the temporary leadership of Gambo Muhammad as they fight to salvage their season.
