Katsina United declares Uche Collins AWOL, threatens legal action
A contractual dispute is brewing at Katsina United F.C. after the club declared its leading striker Uche Collins Absent Without Official Leave (AWOL) following his unexplained disappearance from team activities.
The forward, who currently tops the club’s scoring chart in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), was last seen in action on February 22, 2026, during Katsina United’s league fixture against Rangers International F.C. at the Mohammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
Since that match, the striker has reportedly gone incommunicado and vacated the club’s accommodation without notifying the management, raising serious concerns within the team’s hierarchy.
Reacting to the development, the club’s chairman, Surajo Umar Baba, confirmed that the player’s absence constitutes a breach of contract and warned that legal steps could follow if the situation is not resolved.
"The player has been absent from the club's activities without official permission since February 22nd, 2026, when he participated in our match against Rangers International Football Club," Surajo said.
The Katsina United boss also disclosed that there are reports suggesting the striker could be negotiating with a European club despite still being under contract.
"We've received rumors that he's in talks with a European club, but let me make it clear: Uche Collins is a Katsina United player, and he has a binding contract with us until end of 2026/2027 Football season," the chairman emphasized.
The club has also issued a warning to any potential suitors, insisting that attempts to sign the player without proper procedure could trigger legal and disciplinary consequences.
"We warn any club entertaining the idea of poaching him to think twice, lest they face legal consequences and disciplinary action."
Baba further stressed that the striker’s actions violate both domestic league regulations and international football rules.
"Uche's actions are a clear breach of contract, contravening NPFL regulations, the Commercial Framework, and FIFA's rules. We're taking this very seriously and have reported the matter to the relevant authorities."
As part of measures to protect its contractual rights, Katsina United has also requested that the player’s International Transfer Certificate (ITC) be withheld pending the outcome of the dispute.
Despite the controversy, the club leadership has appealed for calm among supporters while promising that the matter will be handled in line with football regulations.
"We appreciate the support of our fans and stakeholders and assure them of our commitment to resolving this matter in accordance with the rules and regulations governing the sport," Surajo concluded.
