NAWFA President hails FCT FA over successful Inter-Area Women's football tournament

The President of the Northern Amateur Women Football Association (NAWFA), Moses Nagogo Bako, has commended the FCT Football Association (FCT FA) for the successful organisation and conclusion of the 2026 FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Football Tournament.
Bako, a prominent women’s football advocate and analyst, described the tournament as a significant step towards strengthening grassroots women’s football and creating a pathway for young female players in the Federal Capital Territory.
The competition, which featured teams representing the six Area Councils of the FCT, culminated in a closely contested final between Bwari and Kuje Area Councils, with Bwari emerging champions after a 1-0 victory over Kuje.
The NAWFA President praised the FCT FA for sustaining the competition and providing young girls with an organised platform to develop their football abilities, gain competitive experience and attract the attention of coaches and scouts.
He particularly commended the Chairman of the FCT FA Women’s Football Committee, Dr Pat Ajuma Ayegba, and other members of the association for their commitment to grassroots development and the advancement of women’s football.
According to Bako, the tournament demonstrates the importance of taking women’s football development beyond the elite level and investing consistently in competitions at the grassroots.
He noted that the FCT FA’s decision to involve all six Area Councils is particularly commendable, as it provides opportunities for players from different communities to be discovered and nurtured.
The tournament also produced two dramatic semi-final encounters, with both finalists having to survive penalty shootouts.
Bwari defeated Kwali 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time, while Kuje overcame defending champions AMAC by the same penalty score following another 1-1 draw.
Bako said the competitiveness of the matches was an indication of the growing quality and interest in women’s football at the grassroots level.
He urged the FCT FA to sustain the tournament as an annual platform and continue improving its structure, noting that consistent grassroots competitions are vital to producing players capable of progressing to professional clubs and national youth teams.
The women’s football advocate also congratulated Bwari Area Council on winning the 2026 edition, while commending Kuje and all participating Area Councils for their efforts and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
He further called on football stakeholders, government institutions, corporate organisations and private-sector partners to support initiatives of this nature, stressing that the development of women’s football requires collective investment and commitment.
Bako, who is also the CEO of Soccer Queens and President of Soccer Queens Exclusive Rising Together Initiative, said competitions such as the FCT Inter-Area Council tournament provide more than football matches—they create opportunities for young girls to dream, develop their talents and potentially build careers through the sport.
He congratulated the FCT FA for bringing the second edition to a successful conclusion and expressed optimism that more Area Councils and stakeholders would continue to invest in the growth of women’s football across the country.
