Team Nigeria intensifies Commonwealth Games build-up with Aberdeen training camp

Team Nigeria has stepped up preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games by establishing a training base at the Aberdeen Sports Village in Scotland, as the countdown to the competition enters its final stages.

With 18 days remaining before the Games begin in Glasgow, the Nigerian delegation will spend the next three weeks at the high-performance facility, using the period to sharpen preparations before moving into the Games Village.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) described the Aberdeen Sports Village as the ideal environment for athletes to fine-tune their performances and acclimatise ahead of the multi-sport event.

Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in Team Nigeria's readiness, emphasizing the importance of providing athletes with world-class facilities during the crucial final phase of preparations.

"With 18 days to the Games, our focus in this final preparation phase is ensuring every athlete has access to the best possible training environment," Olopade said.

"Aberdeen Sports Village offers facilities that meet the highest international standards, and we are confident our athletes will make the most of this final preparation period. We remain optimistic about Team Nigeria's prospects in Glasgow and wish every athlete an injury-free and successful campaign."

Recognised as one of Scotland's premier high-performance sports centres, Aberdeen Sports Village boasts an internationally accredited athletics track, a UK Athletics-certified indoor athletics centre, an Olympic-standard aquatics complex, a high-performance gymnasium, modern recovery facilities and multi-sport indoor arenas. The venue has previously hosted major international competitions and regularly serves as a training base for elite athletes from across the world.

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria's camp continues to grow, with 18 additional athletes arriving in Scotland on Saturday. Their arrival brings the total number of athletes in camp to 74, while more athletes and officials are expected to join the delegation in the coming days as preparations gather pace ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
