NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye commends players after drug-free test results

Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has praised players across the league for maintaining a drug-free record following last season’s doping checks.

The commendation comes after the National Anti-Doping Committee (NADC) of Nigeria released its report on tests conducted during the 2024/25 campaign. In a letter to the NPFL, the committee confirmed that all sampled players tested negative for banned substances.

“I am very satisfied with the outcome of the tests on our players carried out by the NADC, and I want to commend our players for staying clean,” Elegbeleye said in reaction to the report.

According to Odo Raphael Okafor, Deputy Director and Head of Drug Testing, the initiative was part of efforts to safeguard the integrity of the NPFL and align with the World Anti-Doping Code.

“Out of the 32 urine samples taken from randomly selected matches, all results returned negative. This shows that none of the players tested were using substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This is commendable,” Okafor noted.

Looking ahead, the NADC confirmed that random testing will continue in the 2025/26 NPFL season. Plans are already in place to conduct 16 tests across four fixtures, chosen in collaboration with the league’s leadership.

“The commitment remains to uphold fair play, integrity, and protect the health of our sportsmen and women,” the agency added.
