Nigeria's Samson Adamu gains momentum in race for CAF Secretary General

A potential leadership shake up is brewing within the Confederation of African Football as Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu emerges as the frontrunner to succeed Véron Mosengo-Omba as Secretary-General.

The race for the influential administrative role comes at a time when Confederation of African Football is grappling with internal tensions and governance debates following controversies linked to the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Adamu, currently serving as CAF’s Head of Competitions, has reportedly gathered considerable support among members of the Executive Committee, with many viewing him as a capable administrator with deep knowledge of African football structures.

His experience overseeing major CAF competitions has strengthened his reputation as a reliable candidate to lead the organisation’s administrative machinery.

Despite the growing backing, his possible appointment has encountered resistance from some North African football federations.

Sources within CAF indicate that influential associations from countries such as Egypt and Morocco remain cautious about his promotion, reflecting long-standing political rivalries within the continental body.

The succession debate intensified after CAF’s Executive Committee moved against extending Mosengo-Omba’s tenure, even though CAF president Patrice Motsepe had earlier suggested the possibility of a one-year extension.

The issue gained further momentum when Samir Sobha, president of the Mauritian Football Federation, reportedly insisted that CAF statutes be respected, pointing out that Mosengo-Omba had already surpassed the age limit for the Secretary-General position on October 15.

In recent months, Mosengo-Omba has also faced criticism over several administrative decisions that were reportedly taken without Executive Committee approval.

Among the controversial moves were the promotion of Cédrick Aghey to lead CAF’s legal department and the dismissal of Yassin Osman Robleh, whose removal surprised several members of the committee due to his widely praised professionalism.

The decision prompted Augustin Senghor to seek a meeting with Motsepe in order to address the growing concerns over governance within the organisation.

Mosengo-Omba is now expected to step aside as he prepares to pursue the presidency of the Congolese Football Federation, although reports indicate he has continued to reorganise departments within CAF by appointing allies to strategic roles.

With the matter expected to feature prominently at the next CAF Executive Committee meeting, attention is firmly shifting to who will take over the powerful administrative office. While Adamu appears to hold the early advantage, opposition from some North African federations highlights the persistent political divide between North African and sub-Saharan blocs within CAF.

The unfolding succession battle underscores the delicate balance of power within African football governance as CAF seeks stability and a clearer direction for the future.
