Nigeria dominates wild card selections for 16th African Scrabble Championship
Nigeria has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the Wild Card selections for the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship (ASC) after the Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) awarded seven automatic qualification slots ahead of this year's tournament in Monrovia, Liberia.
The seven Wild Card places were shared between two countries, with Nigeria claiming four slots while Kenya secured the remaining three, giving Nigeria the largest contingent of automatic qualifiers.
Defending African Scrabble champion Oluwatimilehin Doko leads Nigeria's list of qualifiers, earning automatic entry as the reigning continental champion. He is joined by Cyril Umebiye, a President's Cup winner, African Under-19 champion Prestige Archibong, and African Under-15 champion Sophia Ekeruche.
Kenya's automatic qualifiers are President's Cup champions Allan Oyende and Nicholas Mbugua, alongside Bernard Amuke, who received the ECASA 2026 Wild Card.
PANASA President Adekoyejo Adegbesan explained that Amuke was awarded the ECASA Wild Card after Oyende had already secured automatic qualification by winning the President's Cup, making Amuke the next eligible player.
Under PANASA's qualification rules, Wild Card places are reserved for players who have won PANASA-sanctioned tournaments, including recognised regional championships, since the conclusion of the previous Africa Scrabble Championship.
The association also clarified that the Wild Card selections do not reduce each country's allocation for the championship. Participating nations will still be allowed to register up to 15 home-based players and five diaspora players for the continental event.
Despite earning automatic qualification, PANASA noted that all seven Wild Card recipients must complete the official registration process within the stipulated deadline to confirm their participation in the championship.
Congratulating the qualifiers, the continental governing body expressed optimism that the 16th Africa Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia, will provide another exciting chapter in Africa's premier Scrabble competition.
