Nigeria make history with first-ever promotion to Billie Jean Cup Europe/Africa Group II
Nigeria's women's tennis team has reached a historic milestone after defeating hosts Botswana 2-1 to earn promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Group II for the first time.
At the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone, Success Ogunjobi and Barakat Quadre delivered the crucial singles victories that secured promotion for the Nigerian side, coached by Rotimi Akinloye.
Ogunjobi handed Nigeria the early advantage with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chelsea Chakanyuka in the opening singles match. Quadre then produced a remarkable comeback, recovering from a set down to defeat Ekua Youri 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 and seal an unassailable 2-0 lead before the doubles rubber.
Botswana claimed the doubles contest 6-2, 3-6, 10-5, but it was only a consolation as Nigeria wrapped up a memorable 2-1 victory.
Nigeria's squad for the Africa Group III tournament featured Barakat Quadre, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed, and Etoro Bassey.
The promotion race went down to the wire, with Nigeria, Botswana, and Tunisia all finishing the three-team promotion pool with one win and one defeat apiece. Each nation also ended with three rubber wins and three losses, forcing organisers to apply the competition's tiebreak criteria.
Nigeria emerged top of the standings, while Botswana finished second, ensuring both countries secured the two available promotion spots for the 2027 Europe/Africa Group II competition.
The Nigerian team had booked their place in the promotion play-offs after an unbeaten run in the preliminary stage. They sealed top spot in Group C with a dominant 3-0 victory over Madagascar, as Ogunjobi rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, Quadre recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory, and the doubles pairing of Quadre and Mohammed completed the clean sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph.
The Africa Group III tournament, which featured 11 nations, was held on outdoor hard courts in Gaborone, Botswana, from July 13 to 18.
Having made their Billie Jean King Cup debut in 2021, Nigeria's promotion to Europe/Africa Group II marks the country's greatest achievement yet in the world's premier women's international team tennis competition.
