Team Nigeria have departed for Rabat, Morocco, ahead of a crucial 2026 Davis Cup World Group II tie against the hosts, with promotion to World Group I at stake.

The Nigerian contingent left the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in the early hours of Monday, September 14, for the two-day tie scheduled for September 19 and 20 at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc in Rabat.  

Nigeria secured their place at this level after defeating Uzbekistan 3-1 in February, marking the country’s return to the World Group II stage for the first time in 30 years.  

The upcoming encounter presents Nigeria with another opportunity to make history, as victory over Morocco would earn the country promotion to Davis Cup World Group I.  

Nigeria will also be seeking to end a difficult head-to-head record against the North Africans, having lost all four previous Davis Cup meetings between the two countries.  

The Nigerian squad is led by former national number one Daniel Adeleye, alongside current top-ranked player Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar. Head coach Benson Ishicheli will oversee the team’s technical preparations.  

Youngster Oluwaseun Ogunsakin is expected to join the team in Morocco after recently featuring at the junior Grand Slam level, including Roland Garros and the US Open.  

The team spent about three weeks in an intensive training camp in Lagos, including preparations on the clay courts of the Lagos Country Club, as the players worked on their fitness, match readiness and team chemistry.  

The Nigerian delegation is expected to settle in Rabat and continue preparations before the opening matches on September 19.

Morocco, meanwhile, will have home advantage as both teams battle for a place in the next tier of the Davis Cup competition.

For Nigeria, the assignment represents more than another international tie. A victory would cap a remarkable progression following February’s success against Uzbekistan and move the country closer to the upper echelon of international team tennis.

With promotion to World Group I within reach, Adeleye and his teammates will hope to produce a historic performance and finally break Nigeria’s Davis Cup jinx against Morocco.
